A Free State police sergeant has lost his life while responding to a complaint in the early hours of Saturday morning, after a collision involving a police convoy and a Toyota Quantum on the N8 near Sannaspos.

According to SAPS, four police vehicles were travelling east towards Sannaspos at approximately 02:45 when a white Toyota Quantum travelling in the opposite direction allegedly entered their lane and struck the convoy. The Quantum subsequently collided head-on with the third police vehicle.

The 47-year-old sergeant driving that vehicle was declared dead at the scene. His colleague, also a sergeant, was injured and transported to hospital, while the 34-year-old Quantum driver was also taken to hospital.

A case of culpable homicide has been opened for investigation.

For NovaSpeak, this loss carries an especially painful reality.

Just yesterday, we were with this very officer as he attended to a theft complaint.

Yesterday, he was doing what police officers do every day — responding, assisting and serving the community.

Today, we are reporting on his death.

It is a stark reminder that behind the uniform is a human being who leaves home to serve, often facing risks that most of us never see.

Free State Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thabang Lesia expressed his condolences to the officer’s family, friends and colleagues, describing his death as a painful reminder of the dangers police members face while performing their duties.

NovaSpeak extends our deepest condolences to the fallen officer’s family, colleagues and loved ones.

We also wish the injured officer and the Quantum driver a speedy recovery.

Yesterday, we saw an officer doing his job.

Today, we mourn a life lost while doing it.

Rest in peace, Sergeant.
