HEIDEDAL, BLOEMFONTEIN — Three faces. Three strips of tape. One uncomfortable question hanging over the political landscape of Ward 16: Who will speak when Heidedal demands answers?

The latest NovaSpeak: The Pink Print Spill the Tea campaign is more than a political poster. It is a challenge to those seeking public office and a reminder to residents that an election should be about more than party colours, campaign slogans and promises.

With the 2026 Local Government Elections approaching, candidates are positioning themselves to win the confidence of voters. But for residents dealing with concerns about water, sewage, crime, infrastructure, youth unemployment and development, the question is not who can campaign the loudest. It is who can present credible solutions and account for their commitments.

The tape across the mouths in the poster is symbolic. It represents the unanswered questions that can emerge when communities demand accountability. It is not an allegation that any of the individuals pictured has deliberately silenced residents.

The message, however, is unmistakable: Heidedal wants answers, not another season of promises without follow-through.

♟️ THE WARD 16 DEBATE: WHO IS READY TO FACE THE QUESTIONS?

A public call for a Ward 16 councillor debate previously placed six candidates in the spotlight: Gregory Werner, Paulnita Marais, Cadian Bukes, Vicus J Visser, Sydney Maasdorp and Arthur Terblanche.

According to the public Facebook exchange that prompted the discussion, Gregory Werner and Paulnita Marais appeared willing to participate in a panel discussion. The positions of the other candidates should not be assumed without confirmation.

That exchange has raised a question worth asking: should residents continue waiting for a face-to-face debate, or should NovaSpeak take the questions directly to social media and invite every candidate to respond publicly?

A public online question-and-answer session could give all six candidates the same questions and a fair opportunity to answer. Residents could then compare their proposals, assess their priorities and decide which responses best address the challenges facing Ward 16.

The objective is not to embarrass candidates or manufacture political conflict. It is to make the election conversation more meaningful.

If a debate can be arranged, let the candidates meet. If an online forum is more practical, let the questions be asked there.

The format can change. The need for accountability cannot.

☕ FIVE HARD-HITTING QUESTIONS FOR WARD 16 CANDIDATES

NovaSpeak is putting five questions on the table for every candidate seeking the Ward 16 councillor position.

1. WATER AND SEWAGE: WHAT WILL YOU DELIVER, AND BY WHEN?

Residents have raised concerns about water interruptions, burst pipes and sewage problems. What specific steps will you take to get these issues addressed, how will you escalate matters beyond your direct authority, and what measurable progress should residents expect to see within your first 100 days in office?

2. THE QUARRY: WILL YOU PUSH FOR ANSWERS OR LET THE ISSUE FADE AWAY?

Given the concerns raised about the quarry and its potential impact on the surrounding community, will you commit to seeking transparent answers from the relevant authorities about safety, environmental compliance and rehabilitation? What will you do to ensure residents receive documented updates rather than vague assurances?

3. CRIME AND COMMUNITY SAFETY: WHAT IS YOUR PRACTICAL PLAN?

Residents want safer streets and effective responses to crime. What concrete steps will you pursue with law enforcement, community safety structures and other relevant stakeholders, and how will you report progress to residents without making promises that fall outside a councillor’s powers?

4. YOUTH UNEMPLOYMENT AND OPPORTUNITIES: WHERE IS THE PLAN?

Young people need more than motivational speeches during election season. What practical initiatives will you pursue to connect local youth with skills training, employment opportunities, entrepreneurship support and available programmes? How will you measure whether those initiatives are reaching Heidedal residents?

5. ACCOUNTABILITY: HOW WILL WE HOLD YOU TO YOUR PROMISES?

If elected, will you commit to regular public feedback sessions, transparent updates on municipal complaints and clear explanations when commitments are delayed or cannot be fulfilled? And if residents find that you have failed to deliver on a promise, what mechanism will you put in place to answer directly to the community?

These are not questions designed to secure easy campaign sound bites. They require candidates to explain their plans, acknowledge the limits of their authority and identify how residents can measure progress.

THIS IS NOT ABOUT PARTY COLOURS. IT IS ABOUT HEIDEDAL.

A councillor cannot personally resolve every municipal problem. Many decisions depend on municipal departments, council processes, budgets and other authorities.

But residents have every right to expect their elected representative to communicate, follow up on complaints, advocate for the ward and explain what is being done when problems persist.

A campaign poster cannot repair a burst pipe. A slogan cannot resolve a sewage spill. And a promise to create opportunities means little without a credible plan for pursuing them.

The real test of leadership is what happens after the election, when the campaign music stops and residents still need answers.

THE MICROPHONE IS WAITING — WILL THE CANDIDATES RESPOND?

NovaSpeak invites Gregory Werner, Paulnita Marais, Cadian Bukes, Vicus J Visser, Sydney Maasdorp and Arthur Terblanche to engage with these questions.

Each candidate should have a fair opportunity to respond, and their answers should be presented accurately and in context.

Heidedal residents are also invited to join the conversation. Which of these questions matters most to you? What issue have we missed? And what would you ask the person seeking your vote?

The community deserves an election conversation focused on practical solutions, clear commitments and accountability.

☕ SPILL THE TEA: If you want Heidedal’s vote, are you prepared to answer Heidedal’s questions?

The chessboard is out.
The five questions are ready.
The community is watching.

Candidates, the next move is yours. ♟️
